The Winter of 2006 continued into 2007, with quite a bit of snow, by Lower
Mainland standards. In fact, it snowed heavily enough during one night that
SP crews were unable to keep up. (I slept through it, OK?!) And for the
first time since its inception, Skeena Pacific Railway was shut down for
more than a week. I thought of sending Marty Cozad a request for his rotary
snow plow but figured that, by the time it got here, the snow would have melted. |
And, indeed, only a few days later, all sign of the snow had disappeared and
the Meziadin Viaduct hours were suddenly numbered. Sometimes you do
something on your railway which seems like a really good idea at the time.
The Meziadin Viaduct was one of those things. It provided a long passing
track between North Kalum and Dees' Junction, but it was just ugly. It drew
far too much attention to itself, and therefore had to go. |

Rule One, "Robots shall never harm..." Wrong rule. "The railway should
always be capable of being operated" ruled the viaduct replacement. A
carefully-laid piece of 1'x4' cedar was placed along the new right-of-way
alignment and then the approaches were extended to join the new section.
Switches were placed at each end of the old alignment so that trains could
continue to operate until such time that everything could be pulled
together. |
The viaduct has now been replaced by a temporary bridge. Trackwork on the
viaduct is still functional, but ready for the next move. Tear the thing
out! Now, if you've read the pages about how this line was built, you know
I'm going to have way too much fun getting it out. The concrete work alone
weighs in at nearly a hundred pounds. Time for the hammer. |
