2008 has started and progressed with amazing rapidity. I
am writing this in mid-March with a small hail/snow shower passing by.
Nothing stuck but it highlights why I just don't seem to have got started on
the building/re-building season. That and the fact that when I did start
a closer inspection in early February, I realised that this would have to be a
year of re-building rather than new building. Not necessarily a bad thing,
but more than I had expected. Over the years (2000 does seem to be a while
ago) the railway has been built to get it into operation. Between very heavy
rain and some poor material choices (the cedar 1x4 railbed in hidden places
seemed like a good idea at the time) means that track is going to have to be
lifted and roadbed rebuilt in a more substantial manner. A concrete or brick
base for those 'hidden' places appears to be in order. And renewal of
ballast in all the 'open' spots, too. |

Another little challenge is our southern fence
line. The railway runs close beside it and early last year, three posts were
broken in a heavy wind storm. It was 'temporarily' propped up. So I decided
that this year I really should fix the thing, but that would mean moving the
line away from the fence. Rule One was applied (It's always got to be able
to run trains) and so I once again dis-assembled Kalum Yard with the idea of
running the trains back through it while the fence line was fixed. A couple
of weeks ago, after a long conversation with my neighbour, we determined
that the fence would be fine with the installation of some adjacent steel
posts. The fence is now straight and firm. Kalum Yard, however , is in need
of a complete rebuild and I still need to improve the railbed along the
fenceline. |
